How many months had it been since he last looked upon Blackthorn City? Nicohli rubbed at his temples as another wave of exhaustion swept over him. He hadn't slept in three days; it was too important that he reach the city as quickly as possible. Adjusting his feathered hat to keep the early sun off his eyes, Nicohli made to continue down the path towards Blackthorn when a voice to his right halted his movements. "Whoa there, Musketeer. Blackthorn doesn't let just anyone in, what with this war going on. Let's see some ID." A stern-faced man called out, stepping out from his single-person building to approach Nicohli. Nicohli's golden yellow eyes lingered on the guardsman for a moment before he reached into his jacket and pulled out his identification card. It seems Blackthorn City has stepped up its security ever since the attack on Dragon's Den. Lux wasn't going to let Nox attempt another assault. The guard blinked when he realized that Nicohli's ID was military-class and not standard issue. "Ah, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were a soldier. You aren't wearing any Lux mili--" "You know now." Nicohli cut in, his thick accent bowling over the guard's mumbled apologies. He handed Nicohli back his ID after a few seconds, inclined his head, and returned to his post. Nicohli placed the laminated card back in his jacket and made his way down the rocky slopes towards the city. Much had changed in the months after the skirmish that swallowed the city in chaos. Lux's presence was much more apparently now, but there was also a sense of...structure to the way the citizens went about their lives. Blackthorn City would be prepared if another attempt was made on Dragon's Den. As he let his eyes scan his surroundings, Nicohli spotted the rock formation known as the Dragon Rock. He made his way to the monument and placed a hand upon the chiseled surface of the rock. It was good to know that those who lost their lives defending his home would always be remembered. That battle changed everything for Nicohli. He had two lives taken from him; the structured life of a monk and the life he had left behind with his family. Nox stole them both from him and he would make them pay. He wouldn't be able to do it alone, though. He needed support and resources, which was why he joined Lux's military. However, the politics and strict criteria of Lux was getting him nowhere fast. That was why Nicohli had decided to return home. When Nicohli heard that Clair had affiliated Blackthorn City with Lux, he knew this was his opportunity. What Nox did to Blackthorn would never be forgotten within the ranks of the Dragon Clan. However, Clair's position as a public figurehead for both Lux and the Dragon Clan would keep them from paying back that debt as they would like. Nicohli deduced this and decided to offer his service to the Dragon Clan if they supplied him with resources needed to take down key members of Nox. While it's true that the Dragon Monks of Wyvern Isle do not agree with the Dragon Clan's pompous view of purity and bloodlines, Nicohli had turned his back on the Dragon Monks when he left to fight this war. He was not restricted to their tenants and views anymore. He made his own decisions now. Nicohli turned from the Dragon Rock and made his way down the hill towards the moiety of the Dragon Clan. He only hoped the situation would be enough to keep the Dragon Clan from holding too true to their traditions. He wasn't a full-blooded descendant of the Dragon Clan's ancestors; he barely had any of their blood at all. The Dragon Clan didn't view those without their blood quite so favorably. Hopefully his Tamer training would stay their judgment until he had proposed his offer. DRAGONS' ROARS FILL UP THE NIGHT |
