NOX: EVELYN MATTHEWS I'M WALKING ON SUNSHINE |
FULL NAME EVELYN MATTHEWS was the name her momma gave her, but has been calling herself LYNNE since when she was in diapers. In school, she earned the nickname WHIZ-KID but she never liked the title much. BACKGROUND Born in a Celadon City hospital on NOVEMBER 13TH, Lynne spent the majority of her early childhood living in a TRAILER PARK just outside Celadon City limits. It was poverty, but it was not an unhappy upbringing; father, mother, and daughter lived a comfortable if not plain life of hand-washed clothes and the old family recipe for vegetable stew. As a child, Lynne could best be described as a tinkerer. Anything she could get her hands on as a child she would carefully take apart - then cue massive tears when her toddler hands couldn't quite figure out how to put it back together again. She was constantly seen waddling after her father, who was a very do-it-yourself-dad as well as a mechanic and was constantly helping the community out with simple repairs for their motor homes. Despite both being high school dropouts, Evelyn's parents were very adamant about the face that Evelyn must receive a decent education so that she wouldn't end up knocked up in a trailer down the road by age sixteen. So determined that their daughter would attend college and make something of herself, her parents outright forbade her from taking the average ten year old's crusade across Kanto to become a Pokemon trainer. They did, however, relent a little and allow her to keep a Poochyena she brought home one day which she had found abandoned and roaming Celadon. When she was old enough to enter the public school system, her parents set her up with a very decent laptop - probably the most expensive item in their home minus the trailer itself - and a city public transit pass. As long as the report cards sent home gave every indication that Lynne was succeeding in her studies, her parents essentially gave her free reign. Lynne found herself using this free reign quite liberally. School, tests, papers and all of the academia crap came quite naturally to her. It took hardly any effort at all to finish the day's homework and have the rest of the day to her leisure. Unfortunately, Evelyn didn't really have friends besides her Poochyena. The distance from her school to the trailer park and perhaps the shabbiness of her clothes or the little hint of an uneducated twang in her voice meant that most parents didn't particularly want their precious son or daughter hanging around her. Kids will be kids - but children can be so cruel, no? The teasing and social isolation forced Evelyn to turn to other means of distracting herself, or risk the hints of depression spiraling into something much worse. She spent most of her free time in the public libraries around the city, voraciously filling herself with knowledge in attempts to alleviate the emptiness she felt aching in her chest. Every weekend, she spent her days up to her elbows in motor grease, helping out at her dad's shop. At these times, the little girl could truly come alive; customers would find it hard to believe that the smiling girl in pigtails with a little engine oil on one cheek was reserved and sullen at school, keeping her head deep in her book. Evelyn soon stopped being good at school and became exceptional. An elite private technical school paid to have her tested at age ten, and found that her IQ qualified her as a genius. This new school offered her a full scholarship to attend, which she accepted. The new school was a boarding school, however; though her parents' buttons were popping with pride, it marked an end to her time spent in the familiar comfort of their trailer community and the motor shop. If she had felt like an outsider in public school, it was even worse at the boarding school. Most kids came from wealthy families and had much more experience in way of life, travel, pokemon training... She fell into a similar routine as she had a her old school - now she spent her free time in computer labs rather than libraries and a robotics studio rather than her dad's shop, but it was much the same. Eventually, however, one of the members of the school's robotics team reached out to her and offered her a spot on the team. Lynne accepted instantly, so eager to finally have a sense of belonging. Finally, Lynne had a "group." She helped bring the team victories, and they helped to show her what the glorious city of Celadon had to offer. The team won a lot of money from their competitions, and it wasn't as if the other members needed much extra money to begin with, so Lynne found herself quickly initiated into a world of fancy dinners and navigating conversations about the latest technologies. When she was fourteen and fifteen, this evolved into sneaking into clubs and watching pokemon battle gambling of questionable legality. They never got caught - all of these rich, well-off families were of course major Lux supporters, living in Kanto, so there would probably be little consequence for the spoiled boarding school kids even if they had been. Inadvertently around this time, Lynne also began to expand her own Pokemon team by way of prizes from Hackathons and lucky wins from slots. Into her sixteenth year, however, Lynne got herself into a spot of trouble. It started small - helping people turn off the filters on the school computer network, for example. It escalated a little; the robotics club president ran into a smidgen of academic trouble when her senioritis kicked in, and needed a couple of points added to her grades to make sure she could keep her scholarship. Evelyn was happy to help, though there was always a bit of hesitation; the thought of returning to her parents after losing her scholarship was unimaginable. However, though it was no secret that Evelyn was smart, it soon became apparent just how easy it was to get her to do something. Never wanting to jeopardize her social life, Lynne was if anything eager to please. Another one of the senior members of the club got into a "situation," as he described it. A DUI over the weekend... wouldn't it be a simple thing for a smart girl like Lynne to make it go away for him? Unfortunately for young Evelyn, the police network of Celadon city was a bit more protected (especially in light of the Lux versus Nox conflict) than anything the school had ever set up. Lynne wiped the incident away on the police network and thought she had washed her hands of it, but unknowingly left a digital trail. And that was why, walking back to her dorm one weekend, Lynne was surprised to find her room forced open and her room very hastily searched. Her Rotom, who had taken to possessing her mini-fridge, was able to convey the gist of what had happened. It wasn't just the school that had gotten involved; because the network was monitored by Lux, her little intrusion had gotten her in trouble with some people a little higher up on the ladder. What she did next was an act of panic. She packed a bag, wired all of the money from the Robotics team to a private account, and left. The scare tactics of Lux to keep control over their citizens had worked; Lynne was scared. She headed to Johto, to the coast, and got in contact with Nox. She's been working with them for a little under a year now, but is still at the tender age of SIXTEEN. She's kept her nose out of battles at this point but has found other ways to prove her usefulness. OCCUPATION Officially, Lynne is an ENGINEER. Anything and everything that needs her technical skills - setting up illegal broadcasts, breaking into secure networks, or mechanical fixes - she usually helps out on. ALLEGIANCE Nox - She would like to say that she joined Nox because she believes wholeheartedly in their means and methods of truth and justice. She would like to say that she'd do anything for her cause. In reality, Lynne joined Nox because she got in trouble with Lux. While she believes in the ideals of Nox, if she was being honest with herself she preferred the naive simplicity of an ordered and routine lifestyle under Lux in Kanto. TRAITS |
