THE weather had begun to dip into a crisp chill, a wind drifting through the mountain ridges to drift through the center of the tiny Lux occupied town. It was a peaceful place, perhaps one of the few left in the war torn place the world had crumbled into. Children played in the streets with Ratata or Skitty while parents watched with a careful gaze. Shops had their doors open to let in the fall air, not fearing a stray bullet or Water Gun might find its way inside. People strolled the streets casually, not with head bowed and feet clacking quickly, terrified they'd make eye contact with the wrong person. It was safe here. Peaceful.
But Wally could feel it. Just under the surface of the quaint little town, he could feel the tension. The fear. The terror that soon the war would come to Lavaridge. That there was nothing anyone could do about it. He could see how well everyone tried to hide it. Children stayed a little closer to their families. Woman did not stop to gossip or chat. Men did not laugh and joke in the streets. It was as though the entire town were putting on a show for the rest of the world.
Of course, Wally wasn't one to talk. He too, was putting on a show of sorts. The difference was that he didn't have a choice.
As if to punctuate his point, the boy sudden broke into a wave of coughs. He tugged his handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it to his lips, hacks making his shoulders quack. When he drew the cloth away from his lips, it was spotted with blood.
<Gard...>
Wally raised his head and smiled weakly at his Gardevoir, Angel. She tugged at his sleeve, nodding toward the door of the Lux Lavaridge headquarters. The medicine given to him by Lux improved his health after each treatment, but it had been a week since his last one, and it almost seemed as though his illness was worsening faster then they could treat it. Surely this weather would only make it worse.
But...It was so beautiful outside. The leaves were bright and vivid, the grass still green despite the cold. Wally closed his eyes to savor the wind on his face. How many more falls would he get to see?
"Just a little longer..."
