NOX: SAMANTHA MORINO You say you want a revolution Well, you know we all want to change the world |
FULL NAME SAMANTHA MORINO's the name. SAM works just as well. Though she has all kinds of fake papers, she'll always keep her first name consistent. No point in hiding it. BACKGROUND Samantha was born in OREBURGH CITY on AUGUST 2ND, the hottest day of that year in her hometown. She was born to two unmarried idealists, a lovechild of lofty philosophies and social radicalism. The honest truth of the matter was that neither Samantha's mother nor father were ready to settle and raise a family; because of this, Sam was essentially abandoned to her grandmother for the first few years of her life. Samantha's grandmother did her best to give the fiery-haired child a normal upbringing; Sam's earliest memories date back to peanut butter sandwiches with the crusts lopped off and watching television with her grandmother and her grandmother's Slowking, your typical family to the best of the toddler's knowledge. Her parents flitted in and out of Sam's life often enough to crash for a few days or ask her grandmother for money, but soon enough some new cause would incite them and they would run off to protest genetically modifying pokefeed or some construction project cutting into Viridian woods. Around the time she was eight, however, Sam's parents decided that they wanted their precious, curly-haired daughter back in their life. Though Samantha still spent a significant part of the year with her grandmother, she began to be brought along on protests or meetups, sitting on her father's shoulders with her view blocked by the giant picket sign he carried back and fourth. Her parents were inherently nomadic. The slept on park benches or youth hostels or on the floors and couches of people whose "auras" seemed compatible with their own. It wasn't really a textbook environment to raise a child. Luckily, at said protests or sit-ins, Samantha's parents were well-acquainted with many similar-minded individuals. If it does indeed take a village to raise a child, Sam most certainly had a village; a village of activists with questionable hygienic habits and a fondness for recreational drugs. There was always someone willing to entertain the boisterous child, even if this "someone" was seldomly her own parents. After one trip to Celadon, where her parents had been protesting Pokemon testing for "steroids" sold on the open market (Protein, HP UP, etc), Samantha was dropped off as usual on her grandmother's doorstep. When the aging woman opened the door, however, Sam was not standing alone; by her side was a young Growlithe pup, his tail going a million miles an hour. When Sam's grandmother asked her daughter and son-in-law about the pup, they were vague at best. Through Samantha's recount of their "adventure" and a small article in an online paper, however, Sam's grandmother eventually came to a rather more ominous conclusion. The testing facility that Samantha's parents had been "picketing" had been bombed out and burned to the ground during the time they had been there. Samantha's parents were not only activists; they had been committing acts of borderline domestic terrorism. Samantha had eagerly relayed to her grandmother how they had "rescued" the Growlithe pup from the facility; meanwhile, in the article, her grandmother read that over 60 other Pokemon housed in the research center had perished in the flames. Samantha's grandmother, with the young girl's interests best at heart, began to petition for custody. Before the case could even be looked into, however, Samantha disappeared from school one day - picked up by her parents and whisked out of Oreburgh for good. Her grandmother tried to report it as a kidnapping, but unfortunately since her parents were still her legal guardians - and had no crimes proven against them - the case was dismissed. Samantha would miss Oreburgh, though her parents did ease the transition with a new friend. The Shieldon had been stolen from the Oreburgh fossil research facility, under a justification something along the lines of fossil mining and pokemon resurrection negatively impacting local ecosystems and the environment. So from age nine on, Samantha traveled with her parents. She saw bits and pieces of each of the five regions, traveling from one to the other and taking part in the extreme antics of the people her parents ran with. Her Growlithe, nicknamed Duke, was as rambunctious and risk-taking as she was; her Shieldon, named after Gabriel the angel, was the measured and slow creature of reason. When a group of left-wing extremists raided and destroyed a farm used for breeding starter Pokemon for professors - "Pokemon should not need to be aggressively bred for the ten-year-old masses looking to start their Pokemon journeys!" - a third Pokemon joined Sam's personal team, a female Bulbasaur nicknamed Yasmin. However, Sam missed her grandmother dreadfully. She missed school and her friends and Oreburgh. Her complaints became a point of constant conflict between her and her parents. As she grew a little older, she became less and less naive to what her parents were doing on their "justice crusades," and the tension between them grew further still. She began outright refusing to participate in protests or rallies that she found stupid or wrong. One night, while her parents were out getting high as kites, Sam slipped out the backdoor of the "family friend's" house they had been staying at and, with her trio of Pokemon, disappeared into the wilderness of Kanto. Samantha was first afraid her parents would come after her, and spent several weeks trying to remain relatively anonymous, sticking to the big city streets where a girl could just be a face in the crowd. When it started to become clear to her that they would not go after her - or at least, not go to the police - the twelve-year-old runaway came to the shocking realization that the world had just became her oyster. Her first priority became to reconnect with her grandmother. Stranded in Kanto, Samantha took up Pokemon battling as a means to supplement her income. Though her own skills were immature at best, Sam began to refine her skills and learn from the three Pokemon that, till that point, she had only seen as friends, not battlers. Duke, however, was a natural at it and was large even for a Growlithe, perhaps thanks to the vitamins the canine had tested on him over the years. Gabriel was clever and careful, not to mention a sturdy creature that could take some hits. Yasmin didn't like playing around, though she certainly didn't seem to mind playing dirty if it would give her an advantage. Eventually Samantha had not only earned enough money for a ferry ticket back to Sinnoh, but also a new found interest in battling. When she knocked on her grandmother's door, however, the wide grin she had been wearing slid away as a stranger answered. When Samantha inquired, the man informed her that the previous occupant of the house had had a stroke the previous month and was relocated to a ward in the local hospital. Samantha went to go visit at once, but it soon became obvious why her grandmother's house had taken up new occupants; it was painfully clear that her grandmother would never leave the hospital. Samantha's grandmother put on a much braver face than she did; the bedridden woman comforted the crying, red-haired child until the sobs subsided into sniffles. Less than two weeks later, Samantha's grandmother passed away peacefully. Sam came into full possession of her grandmother's inheritance, or rather the money was locked away in her name till she was no longer a minor. Samantha also inherited Atticus, her grandmother's faithful Slowking, who joined the young child in an effort to distract her from her constant grieving. There was no longer anything left for Samantha in Oreburgh. Though she experienced a momentary loss of what to do, she soon took up Pokemon training and battling with new vigor. She never stayed in one place for long - perhaps her parent's nomadic tendencies had affected her. She didn't particularly feel driven by the Gym badges and the Elite Four; she took on a few here or there in every region, just to see how her skills lined up, but seemed much more interested in the process of training her Pokemon than in the result. She saw other echoes of her parents in her as well - as she traveled, she often could not help but interfere if she saw an instance of what she deemed injustice. She "confiscated" a Doduo from a trainer who she deemed was being almost abusive in his harsh standards, and didn't seem to mind starting arguments with her sharp tongue and settling them with her fists. She did some objective good in the world as well; she rescued a Dratini from an overpolluted harbor that had not been able to find its way back out to sea, and captured a Graveler and Onix that had been intentionally causing cave-ins for construction crews trying to travel through Rock Tunnel. The law meant nothing to her; "right" and "wrong" was something she defined on her own terms. By the time she was eighteen, she was a formidable trainer, having dedicated herself to the art for the past several years of her life. Samantha had planned on applying to become Ranger after become an adult, but around this time the Pokemon League had just formed Lux and make themselves a public presence. Samantha had a healthy dose of wariness for authority, especially an absolute authority such a Lux. She delayed signing herself up for the Rangers out of wariness, a decision that soon became a permanent one as Lux made their policies more and more extreme as innocent citizen's rights were slowly stripped away. Samantha did not disagree silently. The moment the people's voice began to rise up in protest, Samantha was there in the streets with them. The label "Nox" soon began to be thrown around, and Samantha accepted it without question, even before "Nox" came to stand for any group with organization, not simply a bunch of outraged civilians. Now TWENTY-THREE, Samantha has seen her fair share of battles and skirmishes. Though the war has aged her, she still possesses what many believe to be an unhealthy fire and drive for her cause. At this point in the war, there is no cost too great, no actions too severe for this young extremist. OCCUPATION ACE TRAINER. Though she was extremely close to becoming a Ranger at one point, that dreamboat has set sail. She doesn't ally herself particularly with any other trainer class, so "Ace Trainer" seemed to sum up her past adventures quite well. ALLEGIANCE NOX. She's always been behind their fight for personal freedoms, even when their movement was still viewed as one of extremism in the public eye. Now that Lux has turned into what it is today, her resolve has only been strengthened. Down with Lux, at all costs. TRAITS |
