The boy in the back seat of the black sedan tugged gently at the strips of cloth wrapped over his eyes. The last thing that Yury wanted was for them to come loose, especially when he could hear the hubbub of a gathering crowd. It must have been a very large crowd, for even from the inside of the car, he could hear them loud as day.

"Lucie," the boy spoke. "What do you see?" The car had definitely come to a stop, but Yury still hadn't let go of the girl's hand that he had squeezed for comfort the entire trip from Johto to Unova.

And then the door opened, ushering in even more noise. Yury flinched and clapped his hands over his ears as the driver exited the vehicle and opened the back doors, releasing both children from their seat belts. Yury stood on shaky legs, never letting go of Lucie. She was probably terrified, and so was he, what with all the sudden noise, but he was older. He had to show her there was nothing to be afraid of.

"Lucie, I'm counting on you," he said, giving her another reassuring squeeze, waiting for her to take the lead as the escorts parted the sea of bodies to allow the children to enter the Capitol building.

She didn't know who these people were; she didn't know what these people wanted. They pressed up against the tinted windows like scavengers to a carcass -- no matter how many they went past, there were always more to take their place. Her small, trembling hands clung to Yury's as if he were her lifeline; in a sea of unfamiliar faces and loud clamoring, he was the only thing familiar to her.

The girl was away from Ilex and Azalea for the first time in her life, and she was terrified. "Th-there are a ... l-lot of p-people," she replied quietly. "I c-can't see m-much."

When the door opened, she almost crushed Yury's hand in hers. The sound was deafening. The girl took an unsteady step, attempting to stand. There were more people that she thought. Lucie froze in fear. (They were all strangers, they were all people she didn't know, they were all going to kill her --)

Then she heard Yury's voice, and the girl stood a bit straighter. He needed her. She couldn't disappoint him. Protectively pulling him beside her, she steeled herself and began to walk toward the building. "W-we'll be okay," she whispered -- half to him, half to herself. "I p-promise."

When the car rolls up, it seems like the whole of the Republic is waiting with baited breath to see what will happen. Will they catch a glimpse of the children, they wonder. War orphans they've heard. From Goldenrod a few of the rumors say, while others name Lilycove as their place of birth. No one ever does their homework because, in the end, it isn't about the truth so much as it's about the story. The better the story, the more papers they sell, and they're all hoping to catch a glimpse of the President's new charges or speak with the man himself before the night is out.

When Jacobi exits the capitol building, the reporters surge forward en mass, each hoping to the the first to catch his attention. He has the good graces to look surprised as his plans come to fruition. Taking in war orphans - no doubt the headlines will hail him as some sort of hero.

Officially, this is a closed adoption, the matter itself meant to be kept hush hush for the sake of the children.

Officially, the leak was a quiet thing. A handful of rumors placed here and there, a quiet trickle of information, some of it true, some of it a tad embellished for effect.

Officially, someone will be getting a reprimand for the leak.

Unofficially, Jacobi couldn't be more pleased with the outcome, and his smile is genuine as half of his personal security team holds the crowd at bay while the other half leads the children up the steps.


"Take the children inside" he tells one of his aides. "I'll deal with the press."

As the woman moves to do his bidding, Jacobi steps forward to address the crowd, raising his voice until it caries over the din. "Please, I'll speak with all of you in a moment if you'll just give the children some space. They've had a long and difficult journey, and there's no need to make this any harder on them," he begins, knowing that he has their attention. Knowing that all eyes are now on him. The vultures are waiting for him to speak now. The ball is in his court.

He felt Lucie's grip on his hand become more confident as the girl drew him forward. Yury drew his strength from the young girl's own nerves. They played off of each other; after all, that was all that the two of them had now.

The din grew louder and louder still. It was overwhelming, and Yury nearly feared that he would be entirely swallowed by the noise. It was an unyielding wave of sounds, and he felt the need to cross his arms over his chest while disappearing into a corner. Instead, a woman's voice pushed through the wall of voices, making itself particularly prominent. His mouth dipped into a curious frown as she insisted on taking them inside. The boy was partially torn between his options. While seeking refuge inside the president's home would have been to the advantage of both him and Lucie, he still felt the desire to stay put, to hear more from their new guardian.

After all, that was his voice carrying over the din of the crowd, wasn't it?

The entire court was silent as Jacobi spoke. Yury wasn't sure why he was convinced that this man was his and Lucie's new guardian. After all, he had never heard the man speak in the past, yet the way that he commanded the crowd suggested otherwise. "Lucie, let's go," Yury says, deciding against taking the bait of his curiosity. The less people, the better.
