NOX: JUAN NOCTERIUM Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place. Come on with the rain I've a smile on my face. |
FULL NAME Juan Nocterium. Call him whatever else you'd like, he doesn't mind. Though why you would is a pure wonder, Juan is a fun name to say. Go on, try it. BACKGROUND Juan was born on April 23, 1967 (46). He was raised in Hearthome City in a fairly large family of battlers. Juan's four siblings were so competitive, always bickering or battling or just being generally rowdy. Juan, the youngest in the family, wasn't quite the same. Believe it or not, Juan was not a very good battler in his early youth. His delicate Barbroach was no match for his siblings' bigger and scarier pokemon. Always they would poke fun at their young brother, taunting him to dump the water type and try something "manlier". He wouldn't dare, there was something about the water type pokemon that was so beautiful, how could he simply ignore them because of his lack of training skill. Do not fear for Juan though, for the young boy soon discovered something much greater than battling. Hearthome would soon host a new outlet for trainers known as Pokemon Contests. Juan was immediately entranced by the strange new art of coordinating, it was a wonder how these trainers could pull off such beautiful wonders with their pokemon. Everyday he would go to the contest hall and watch one of the contests, each one increasing his interest. He was soon a contest super fan, and he desperately wished to be apart of it. Every day he would train with his Barbroach for hours and hours, attempting grand move combinations and dazzling affection techniques. It wasn't long until Juan believed they were ready for their very first contest. Juan entered and well, he was eliminated in the first round. The humiliation was terrible, his siblings ragged on him for days. It almost discouraged him from further participation. However, his embarrassment gave him drive. He trained his Barbroach for a longer period of time, making sure every single combination and technique was just right. For a whole year he relentlessly trained, and eventually gathered enough courage to compete again. He did better, this time getting eliminated in the second round. He pressed on, coming up with systems and smoother routines. Again, offed in the second round. He improved his systems, second round. Eventually Juan did away with the systems and decided to focus more on creativity. That turned out to be a much better focused, he made it to the third round. He decided to take it up a notch, giving himself and his Barbroach more personality and character. He made it to the finals. After a few more tweaks and some good old fashion luck, Juan soon won his very first contest. He didn't stop there, he continued to improve himself and was soon swimming in ribbons. It wasn't long until Juan decided to try a more advanced cup. Less luck there, made it to the second round on his first try. With the competition much tougher, Juan struggled to remain prominent and above the rest. He attempted to really crank the creativity juices and after some more intense practice he actually ended up winning an advanced cup. He kept himself from trying the next level though, the pokemon there were far too majestic. Barbroach was adorable, but cuteness only got you so far. He kept to the advanced cup, obtaining rather minor success. He decided to add more variety, and added a Horsea and a Poliwag to his coordinating team (they were Christmas gifts no less). He regularly competed in minor and advanced contests for many years, only finally moving up to the next level when his Barbroach miraculously evolved into a Whiscash. He was sixteen years old by now, and within the new higher cup he made a name for himself. With his increasing skill from years of practice, Juan soon gained the confidence to attempt more challenging cups quicker than before. By eighteen he had beaten all the cups available except the ever so soul crushing Master Class cup. With a highly trained Whiscash, Seadra, and Poliwhirl, Juan gathered up all the greatness within him and competed. For once he actually won on his first try. That really got some attention. Juan was suddenly a home town celebrity, the youngest man to beat a Master Class cup on his first try. He kept competing, and though he didn't win the master cups very often he did get far enough to retain his hometown fame. Soon enough the Championship Cup came around, and Juan had enough Master Cup wins under his belt to enter. He used every trick in his hat in that competition to make the unheard of happen. He got second place. A rookie Master Cup coordinator got second place in the Sinnoh National Championship. This was the stuff of silly sports movies. Juan was suddenly "One of the greats", a true force to reckon with. However, it wasn't enough for Juan. He believed there was nowhere to go but up, so he decided to leave Sinnoh and journey to the birthplace of the Pokemon Contest: Hoenn. Juan backpacked across Hoenn with his pokemon, back in the days when Contest Tents were everywhere. As you can imagine, the competition was very stiff. Minor cups often had appearances from champion coordinators who liked to kick around rookies. Juan gave the few he met a run for their money, though he rarely could beat such masterful coordinators. It was in Hoenn that Juan met his mentor, a stuffy old coot in Petalburg who loved water types almost as much as Juan. Said old mentor was a relic of the coordinators of old, the very first few when contests were thought to be some foolish pacifist fad. His mentor was the sort to denounce the modern contest, thinking it to be too commercialized and soulless (yeah one of those people). The old man decided to "enlighten" Juan and taught him some routines and tricks from the olden days. He also gave Juan a lesson in charisma so he could more easily win over the judges and audiences alike. Juan would continually visit Petalburg throughout his journey just to learn more from the old coordinator. Though he is a much bigger impact on a different aspect of Juan's life. The kindling of Juan's battler spirit. The old mentor would eventually invite Juan to battle him during one of his visits. Juan was reluctant since he hadn't battled in a long time but his mentor put it this way. Battling goes hand in hand with coordinating, with the right mindset. Juan trained with the old man with such a concept in mind and soon found himself to actually be skilled in the art of battle. Better yet he enjoyed it, not as much as coordinating but it was still a blast. Juan soon began to incorporate battle training into his normal contest practice. As time went on he began battling more and more often with other trainers, and thanks to the fact that he would use slightly altered contest routines that he had already been practicing for years he turned out to be quite the trainer. He mostly focused on contests though, slowly climbing his way up to the top tier of coordinators. He settled himself in Lilycove and practically barreled his way to the Hoenn National Championships. He was age Twenty Four when he became the newest Hoenn Champion Coordinator, and he had never been happier in his life. Juan continued to take part in contests, but with a championship under his belt he had less drive than before. His mentor suggested trying the gym leader challenge, and Juan eventually decided that didn't sound so bad. He prepared a team of six water types to take on the gym leaders of the time, and after a year of procrastinated training he actually decided to go through with it. It took quite a few tries and a good amount of time, but Juan eventually conquered all eight gyms and went off to challenge the Elite Four. He was utterly crushed by the first of the four and Juan decided it was time to take a break from battling. He didn't think himself champion material anyway. Juan continued to compete in contests for quite a while, gaining quite a fortune from all the prize money he won. It was with the tragic passing of his mentor that Juan opened a new chapter in his life. He used his fortune to live to the fullest, going on grand adventures in an attempt to fill up his life as his mentor had not. He also stretched out his coordinator celebrity status, several charities charities, acting as a judge for several contests, and even dabbling in acting for a while. He wrote a couple of romance novels for sport (gathering a rather large female following), learned to speak french because why not, and lots of other stuff that people do in an attempt to fulfill themselves. Ah, but the greatest of honors was yet to come. Juan would soon be invited by the Hoenn Pokemon League to be an official Gym Leader of Hoenn. The eighth slot of the circuit no less. Most didn't expect Juan to accept the offer because of his constant travel and business, but surprisingly Juan was happy to accept. Juan quickly hightailed it to Sootopolis City to settle into his new job. By day Juan would teach youngsters and older fans alike on the art of "beauty battle", the nickname for Juan's move combination battle style. By night, he took on challengers in a grand nighttime spectacular that the whole public could enjoy. Every night, one or two trainers would challenge Juan for their final badge on a stage of ice, water, and bright shiny things. Yet, he preferred the time spent teaching during the day. The wide eyed look he saw from his pupils as he displayed dazzling move combinations always gave him a warm feeling inside. He was especially interested in a young boy who went by the name of Wallace, whose natural skill, appreciation of beauty, and stunning ambition greatly impressed Juan. He took on the boy as his own protege, and taught him everything he knew. Fittingly, it would be Wallace who would take Juan's place as the Sootopolis gym leader upon his retirement. For you see, as grand as the night battles were, they put a toll of Juan. He fought at least one trainer every night, and since he spent the day teaching there was little time for rest. It became so tiresome that Juan put out one grand final show (very few people can replicate such a fabulous event) and moved challenges to day-only, teaching his pupils in between battles. This went on for several years before Juan began to secretly regret his job. It was so boring compared to the adventurous life he had before, just battles day after day after day after day with very few chances for vacation. Thus, Juan decided to take on an early retirement, after several years of Leader service. He passed on his duties to the now grown up Wallace and went of to explore the other regions. His adventures went on for a couple of years before the duties of Gym Leader would plop on top of him once more. Wallace became champion of the Hoenn region, which made Juan as proud as a mentor could be but also left the Eighth Gym leaderless. Juan reluctantly agreed to do his ward a favor and watch the gym until he could find a new leader, which took far longer than expected. He did not teach very often this time around, but he did protect his badge for as long as he was able. Then, the war began, and with the collapse of the Pokemon league Juan decided to skedaddle. He ran to a region far outside the mainlands, a region that very few have even heard of and is so secret that I don't even know about it. He lived in secluded luxury there, but that soon changed when word of the war's effects came to him...five years later. With Hoenn and Sinnoh in perpetual ruin, Juan decided it was time to return to the mainlands. He gathered his courage and pokemon and set off on yet another adventure, though this one shall have greater consequences that he will not be able to foresee. OCCUPATION Juan isn't sure what war he wishes to take in the war, just that he knows he needs to do something, For now he is using his mastery in the art of suave and love of travel to be a spy within the Hoenn region. Perhaps in the future he shall have a greater role, but for now he is (for once) not eager to jump into a spotlight. ALLEGIANCE Juan does not "support" the causes of either faction technically. He finds them both to be petty for resorting to violence so quickly. However, because his apprentice is supporting Nox he has decided to align himself with Nox as well. Plus they rule Hoenn, and he isn't very keen on living anywhere else at the moment. TRAITS |
POSITIVE TRAITS: ▪ Suave ▪ Optimistic ▪ Constantly Jolly ▪ Hard to Anger ▪ Kind ▪ Only fights if he must ▪ Creative Thinker | NEGATIVE TRAITS: ▪ A tad full of himself ▪ Will show no mercy if provoked ▪ Overly Truthful ▪ Incredibly Dramatic ▪ Absent Minded on occasion |
LIKES: ▪ The finer things in life ▪ The little things too ▪ Water pokemon ▪ Water in general ▪ Traveling | DISLIKES: ▪ Rudeness ▪ Being stuck in one place for a long time ▪ Clingy people ▪ People who don't slow down ▪ People who complain and hate too much |
SECRETS: ▪ Juan's adventures are numerous and bizarre. According to him he: Rode a tauros Mt. Silver, rode the whirlpools around the whirlpool islands like an amusement park ride on a wailmer, bounced down Mt. Coronet on the same Wailmer, walked across each of the Unova Bridges backwards, got chased by an army of beedrills for three miles, rode a unicycle down cycle road, currently holds the record of most pidgy wings eaten at a small family restaurant in Kanto, won a staring contest with a gengar, fell down the Ever Grande falls in a barrel, and won a game of hacky sack with a hitmontop . He has many stories like this, though whether they are true or not is questionable. Then again he isn't known to lie... ▪ His six book pokemorph romance novel series, "Oblivious Attraction", has a rabid female following. Though Juan liked to surround himself with his fans, he only has eyes for one woman. A foreign coordinator who became the gym leader of his home town: Fantina. She is partly the reason he bothered to learn french...though it was mostly for fun. He has never gotten up the courage to meet her, though with the war raging he now fears he'll never meet her at all. ▪ Wherever he goes, no matter the place, his trusty butler Sebastian shall be by his side. Sebastian is a snooty middle aged Unovian who has made it his duty to protect Juan after Juan rescued him from an angry Rhydon in (place secret region name here). Sebastian usually likes to remain deadpan and calm, though he is known for being a master boxer, thus messing with him is not the best course of action. Some people believe that Juan's companion is also his "partner", though Juan is quick to dismiss those claims. Sebastian already has a husband in Unova after all. ▪ Juan loves to swim, but only if the water is cold. He cannot stand warm water, he thinks it doesn't feel natural. ▪ Juan used to enter contest with more than just water types. He actually has many pokemon of various types, but has kept them stored since his rise to gym leader. Maybe they shall finally get some use in the future. |
