THE REPUBLIC: ETHAN CALLAWAY they take my soul i take it back and i'm told that's wrong |
FULL NAME Ethan Callaway - his parents gave him that name, and he kind of hates it. Since he hasn't got much of a choice in rearranging the letters to create a nickname (and can't be asked to create an entirely new one), he goes by either Ethan or Cal. Nothing more, nothing less. Nobody calls him by his full name. BACKGROUND Born on January 10th, Castelia City, a city of lights and dreams and hopes - at least, that's what they said, and what he used to believe. His dad was a bartender at the local arcade, and his mother, a trainer and part-time model at the local gym. They met at one of the casinos, and he remembers his mother telling him stories about the lives they led, before and afterwards, and how they just seemed right for each other, like fate wanted them together. In a way, the family was as normal as things could possibly get, with his parents working full time jobs, him going to the schools in a nearby town and the three of them coming back home in the evenings to have dinner together. It was a boring arrangement, but an arrangement all the same, but he didn't realize how much he'd started to depend on the normality until it was stripped and gone. They decided to send him away when he was ten, to live with his grandparents in opelucid city - mostly because their jobs had gotten demanding, and they didn't have time on the side to take care of a kid (there'd been less and less of a 'family', often single parents, and he should've known, he tells himself now, but its too late). Forced to transfer schools and thrust into a completely new town, void of lights and noises and the friends and everything he was used to, with boring grandparents that did nothing but stay at home and argue over who was going to win the latest sports competitions, Ethan spent a lot of time outside, often on his own and around the city itself (when he set foot outside, all the place consisted of were persistent cooltrainer after cooltrainer, begging for battles, and it drove him crazy). He found shopping mall nine and got tangled up in the gang that made the place their home, badgered into getting a team of pokemon for himself and he began to think of them as friends that border-lined family - picking up their speech habits, attitudes and little quirks, both good and bad, ignoring the chill that crawled up his spine every time they lit a cigarette or a scam ended with something on fire, sometimes worse. There were never any calls from his parents, and the biker gang were only a daytime affair. He made his own rules until the initial outbreak of the war, when the phonecall came in. They were separating, they said, only calling to let him know since he was old enough to travel home and visit if he wanted to. No mentions of child custody, what they were going to do about him and how to take care of himself in the now-dangerous society. No mentions of cash to help him along - his grandparents were dirt poor, they knew that they were - or where he was to go if he ever wanted to visit either of them: his mother, the one making the call, mentioned a fight about peace, how the war was going to end before she severed the connection without goodbyes, and he didn't bother to redial. Disheartened, he drifted away from the biker gang, his grandparents and eventually, opelucid city altogether, traveling alone in the region in an attempt to find a place he feels comfortable belonging in, knowing the war won't stop just because he hates it, but still hating it all the same. Somewhere deep down, he also hoped to find his parents' whereabouts, if only to barge in and give them a his opinion and storm straight out (because he stopped giving a damn about how they felt long ago). It's been five years, and he's twenty six, still searching. OCCUPATION His parents wanted him to get a good job and find a place for himself in the world, but ethan's too lazy to follow rules and can't seem to shed the street part of him that he picked up in the past. For now, he's a hooligan - he doesn't like being 'one of them', thinks they get wound up so tight over the smallest things - until he finds a reason for getting a real trainer class to be worth his time and effort. ALLEGIANCE Ethan doesn't want anything to do with the war. He believes that, left long enough, the people who want to kill and fight will eventually dwindle each other off, and that's the way the war's really going to end. He doesn't believe in peace efforts and doesn't want anything to do with the fighting, so he aligns himself with the republic. TRAITS |
POSITIVE TRAITS: ▪ energetic ▪ confident ▪ serious ▪ cautious ▪ clever ▪ resourceful | NEGATIVE TRAITS: ▪ profane & vulgar ▪ apathetic ▪ bitter & grudge holding ▪ arrogant ▪ reclusive & stoic ▪ paranoid |
LIKES: ▪ scrapping (bar fights etc.) ▪ feeling powerful ▪ fire/burning things ▪ chaos & destruction ▪ relaxing ('breathers') | DISLIKES: ▪ losing (at anything) ▪ his parents ▪ fluffy, cutesy things ▪ weakness ▪ peacemakers |
SECRETS: ▪ even though he has an almost moral code to follow by having the set types of pokemon his 'class' is supposed to have, he has this 'thing' for fire pokemon. it's weird, but he keeps a couple on his team at all times. ▪ he likes street fights and fist fights just fine, but when it comes to pokemon, ethan's reluctant. he's afraid that he'll burn or destroy too much, and end up with lives on his hands and problems he doesn't have the time to fix. ▪ his fire pokemon are, more or less, trophies. they don't fight much, because ethan's got a harbored fear of burning cities and towns to the ground if he doesn't have a grip on his urges. keeping fire out of sight and mind helps, even if it's just a little. ▪ he hates his parents because he thinks they're selfish, but he hates the war even more, because it's what force them to separate. as a result, he hates grownups as well as those that think the war can really end with peace, like his parents did. ▪ ethan doesn't do 'friends'. he does acquaintances, allies, or a combination of the two. but never friends. |
