THE REPUBLIC: SHIRLEY JONES Well I know what's right, I got just one life, in a world that keeps on pushin' me around but I'll stand my ground, and I won't back down. |
FULL NAME He prefers his true name, Shirley Jones. Yes Shirley is a girl's name, make fun of it if you wish. He will just make fun of yours too. BACKGROUND All the way down in Solaceon Town, 52 years ago, a young woman died in childbirth. The child survived, and as a distraught father held him in his arms he worried over the future. the father wasn't there for the birth, he was a hooligan. A leader of a local biker gang who had just come back from a weekend of merrymaking. He heard from a neighbor that his wife had gone into labor and rushed to the hospital, only to find himself a single father. He wasn't prepared for this, the baby itself was an accident but the two agreed to work as a partnership. The father was unsure yet happy. He was reluctant to give up his careless life of adrenaline fueled rough and tumble, but on the other hand a child would be one of the few great things to happen to him in his life. Well it would have if it wasn't the cause of such tragedy. He was barely prepared to take care of a child with his wife, how on earth would he take care of one alone? He wouldn't, in his heart he knew he lacked the maturity and patience needed to raise a baby. At least correctly. With his care, the child would grow up to be a terrible person. Such a thing would desecrate his wife's memory. No, as the last remnant of his beloved it was his duty to ensure his proper upbringing. Thus he left the boy at the doorstep of his neighbor and rode out of town. He did name the boy before leaving. The father was all too aware of the evils of the world, and though he wanted his child to be raised properly he would be able to face this cruel world and come out unscathed. Thus he gave the boy a name that would not only ensure his ability to survive, but also keep his beloved's memory with the boy. He gave him the name of the mother: Shirley. The neighbor, upon finding young Shirley on his doorstep, did not know what to think. He had lived by those two upstart kids for about five years, and never thought something like this would happen. It is just one of those odd things you could not predict. The neighbor, known as Kevin Jones in town, was a middle aged man who acted as Solaceon's sheriff. He was reluctant to take on this responsibility, but after reading the Father's note left with Shirley he was too heart broken to pass the boy up. Besides, ever since his own wife passed the man had been rather lonely, and he has always wanted a kid of his own. Thus he took the boy in, he even kept the prissy name out of respect for the mother. He raised Shirley as his own, under his surname and morals. As you can imagine, growing up with a female name was not very easy for Shirley. He was constantly picked on by the children his age, and though Kevin would warn him against it Shirley always reacted violently. Shirley was rambunctious at his age, full of ambition and longing. It was unfortunate that he was ragged on so heavily, it led to him being rather hot headed and harsh. Kevin offered to change it early in the boy's life, but surprisingly the boy declined. He had found the note by then you see, Kevin had planned to give it to him by his sixteenth birthday but Shirley was too nosy. He understood why he was stuck with that name and accepted it, counting the days before he would be old enough to go out on his own and find the ass that named him Shirley. Soon enough (at age seventeen) Shirley would say goodbye to the man that raised him, and go out on a journey to find his father. Before he left, Kevin had given Shirley a pokemon. A little Coragunk companion to give him company. With his new friend at his side, Shirley set off. He ventured all across Sinnoh, meeting strange people and situations. True, his youthful self was still a hot headed fool, but he had a strange charisma that got people to like him. Probably his energetic nature or something, or natural eagerness. Shirley got a few more pokemon along the way, even evolved his Croagunk. He enjoyed battling, a lot less messy than punching someone in the face. Wasn't afraid to brawl though, after all a name like Shirley is bound to bring trouble. He pushed on past every obstacle though, and eventually found what he sought. Two years. It took two years to track down his father to an out of the way bar near Oreburgh City. As soon as he confirmed his Father's name, Shirley let loose a nasty punch to his face. Confused, the Father fought back and the two brawled for ten straight minutes. Eventually, the Father became winded and admitted defeat. Shirley revealed who he was and let loose every reason why he despised his Father and what he did to him. All those years of torment and anger were let loose with the harshest words the boy could think of. Although he was indeed furious at his Father for refusing responsibility, Shirley recognized the positive aspects of his name and revealed those to his Father as well. After his two speeches, Shirley forgave his Father, who promised to keep in touch from now on. Shirley refused that promise, instead convincing him to travel with him back to Solaceon. To make up for lost time. The two traveled back home, only to receive the wretched news that Kevin fell to a heart attack. Shirley's Father offered to live with him for a while but Shirley didn't want to stay in town. He sold Kevin's house and went back on the road with his Father. The most important part about this new journey was what he learned from his Father. The man had greatly matured since that day he left his child on a doorstep, he actually had good wisdom to share. Such as it is fine to be tough and even to display it, but being hot headed and overly eager was not the way to do it. Calm and tranquil was the way to go, being easily angered and brawl-ready wasted energy that you could be using to live. It made sense to Shirley, and from then on tried to be much more calm and laid back. He practiced the art of wit, countering those who made fun of his name with his words rather than his fists. Wit was not easy to comprehend, let alone master. It would take years and years and years for him to get it down. Until then, he just kept himself collected. Eventually he and his Father parted ways, promising that they would meet again in a year's time. During that year Shirley settled down in Canalave City and learned how to box. He admits that he should have learned boxing years ago, it was a good deal of fun to him. He even taught his pokemon a thing or two. He trained the whole year before going out to meet his Father, who didn't show up. In his stead was an older woman who told Shirley that his Father got stuck in the middle of a rogue Garchomp's rampage and perished. Shirley didn't take the news well. He didn't want himself to get stuck in some sort of depression so he decided to get away from Sinnoh and seclude himself. By seclude I mean he joined the army. Within the armed forces he taught himself how to use a proper weapon, and wasn't half bad. He soon enough found a new passion within knives, which were so handy and fun that he made them his weapon of choice. Shirley served overseas in a small dispute between two lesser known regions. Did fine for five years, but as luck would have it he lost his pointer, middle, and ring finger on his left hand. At least he's right handed right? Day before his departure too, oh well he didn't mind. His metallic replacements were cool looking anyway. He did not rejoin after his service ran its course though. War wasn't too great a prospect to invest in. He still wanted to stay away from Sinnoh though, so he became a traveling "muscle for hire". He didn't quite stand out at first, so he decided to pull himself aside and train some more in the boxing art. It took some doing, but eventually the man was a force to be reckoned with. Plus with fancy knife work on his side, hand to hand combat with 'ol Shirley was a hard concept to grasp. He was only fairly good with a gun though, so he was sure to practice his aim on his off time while protecting diplomats and pop stars. Remember that wit I mentioned? Well by age thirty it was finely tuned and sharp. Shirley learned the bodyguard trade and made himself a top hire. It was moderately uneventful, but he met a lot of interesting and fun people. Some of his best friends were met during these days. He would also travel between jobs, visiting other regions just to see how they looked. Time went on, Shirley became older and wiser. Work was easy to come by and fun, and he never found himself short on money. He actually claimed that he wouldn't mind if the rest of his life went this way. He wasn't that lucky though. The mainland war began, and anyone old enough to work a gun flocked to the two factions Lux and Nox for battle. Most folks his age wouldn't bother getting involved, in fact by then they would retire. Shirley tried retirement, it was boring. he wanted to keep himself busy, so for a while he acted as a bodyguard for various Lux politicians. He grew to dislike Lux's views though and became a bodyguard for Nox leaders. He found Nox to be pretentious though, and left them soon enough. Since he hated both sides equally, Shirley decided to dive into uncharted territory. He became a mercenary. He was rather successful too. He pretty much worked for anyone willing to take up his price, and in a war such as this jobs were aplenty. He still serves as a mercenary today, more for entertainment now rather than money. An old man's got to keep busy. He doesn't care who wins the war, as long as he is alive to see the end he'll be happy. OCCUPATION Shirley is using his military training and overall experience to act as a mercenary. He works for anyone that will pay his price, which is rather modest in these dark times. He enjoys the work though he isn't very proud of it. After all, war ain't fun. Thus he mostly leans toward guard jobs, though he is very willing to take up arms if he is hired to. Money's money. ALLEGIANCE Depends on what side has hired him. When asked, Shirley will always respond with The Republic, even though he does not technically support them more than the other two factions. The Republic stands on neutral ground, which is more than enough for Shirley to get behind its shroud. He is not fond for any of the factions' values, but he does not complain. Complaining does not provide work. TRAITS |
POSITIVE TRAITS: ▪ "Chill" as could be ▪ Witty ▪ Hard to anger ▪ Jolly ▪ Imaginative | NEGATIVE TRAITS: ▪ Ruthless ▪ Holds a terrible grudge ▪ Prone to rudeness ▪ Overly competitive ▪ Smug...so very smug |
LIKES: ▪ Walking ▪ Boxing ▪ Knives knives knives knives KNIVES ▪ Relaxing ▪ Meeting new people | DISLIKES: ▪ Hotheads ▪ Youngsters who disrespect their elders ▪ Being called old ▪ Being outsmarted ▪ Attempts to provoke him |
SECRETS: ▪ Though he likes to find other solutions to problems, he isn't afraid to settle things with violence. Heck depending on the job he may even kill you. However, no situation or circumstance will ever allow Shirley to harm a child. Ever. In fact he would protect a child over completing a job any day. It just wouldn't be right. By the way, ask him to harm a child and he'll shoot you in the face. ▪ All of his pokemon are male, he just gives them female names to toughen them up. ▪ He's never entered a boxing tournament. He's afraid he'll get his behind handed to him by the other bigger and meaner professional boxers. ▪ The inside of his coat is lined with an assortment of knives. Flip knives, throwing knives, dinner knives, lots of knives. He also has two guns, two plane ho hum pistols that he barely uses because he has rather sad aim. ▪ All of his pokemon, at some degree, know how to box. Shirley often has them spar with each other as training. Some are better than others... ▪ See those weird dark purple boots that clash with his brighter brown clothes? No? I'll tell you the story anyway. Well at one point a friend of his gave him a tip on a certain rogue Garchomp that was spotted near Sunnyshore City. Feeling in a vengeful mood, Shirley pulled a bunch of favors and would lead a mini-platoon of trainers to rip the father killing rogue dragon type a new one. When the epic battle was done, he made it into a fine pair of boots. |
