They both had their different reasons for not wanting to be here, but only Elle had been prepared enough to bring a distraction. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that people in charge, whether in a boarding school or the military, liked to take their time making decisions. She had no sympathy for Nora, who should have expected this too. But she hadn’t, so Nora had nothing to do but to look around in vain hope of finding something interesting to watch, and to complain that there was nothing to do. Elle was lucky that, after years of practice, she could tune out her friend’s complaints as she read her book.
“I can’t believe you haven’t finished reading that thing already.” Elle didn’t respond, so she tried again. “I can’t believe you’re reading it in public as well. Again.” There was still no response, so Nora decided to push a bit harder. “They might kick you out if they find you reading that.”
Elle rolled her eyes. This book was hardly Nox propaganda. It wasn’t going to get her into trouble at all. She knew she should have ignored her friend again, but it was almost painful to hear Nora attempt to trick her into defending the book. She bookmarked the page before closing the book and offering it to her friend. “Do you want to read it?”
“No.”
“Then find something else to do. We’re probably going to be here for hours.”
Nora briefly screwed her face up at her friend before resuming what she was doing before – leaning against the wall and hope that something interesting, even mildly, would happen and distract her. But nothing was happening here in this little town, and it only took a minute before Nora was debating whether she was desperate enough to ask Elle if the offer still stood.
