LUX: Ren Don't care how, I want it now! |
FULL NAME Ren Hayashi BACKGROUND Ren was born seven years ago on September 8, 2006 in Celadon City minutes before his twin sister Rin. The son of an oil tycoon, he was spoiled from birth. Because he was a 'twin', much of his clothes and toys matched his sister's except in color, a trend started by his mother, who thought it was cute, and perpetuated by every relative who bought them birthday gifts. Despite there being a differently colored duplicate of nearly every toy in the house, he and his sister would often fight over one simply because the other was playing with it. They were two when the war started, and their father's business grew with the increased demand despite him cutting off sales to Nox to keep on Lux's good side. Well before he were actually old enough for school, Ren's father ensured there would be a place for him at what was considered the best private school in the city. He wanted to guarantee the best education money could buy for both his kids. In the week the family was getting ready for the twins to start preschool, the matched set presents evolved from toys to Pokemon. Their mother came up with the idea -- same Pokemon for both, but ones that looked distinctly different at a glance. Their father used his contacts to buy newly-hatched Nidorans: one male, one female. Ren got the male and had to be repeatedly reminded to not to let Pokemon out indoors, much to the annoyance of the housekeeper stuck cleaning up after the kids. Then school started. Ren and his sister were put in different classes from the start, and the sudden separation after having gotten used to their mother always parading them around together to show them off as twins had both throwing tantrums until their father talked the administration into moving one of them. To avoid a repeat performance, they were also put in the same class in subsequent years. Ren had thought he and his sister would be special for having Pokemon, but it didn't take long for them to realize that many of their classmates had at least one, and some even had two! Of course, the spoiled twins immediately complained to their father and by the time their fifth birthdays rolled around, another pair of Pokemon had been purchased. Since they'd enjoyed showing off their matching Pokemon nearly as much as their mother enjoyed showing off her matching children, the birthday present Pokemon this time were Volbeat and Illumise, the pair of apparently distinct species that had proved to be related in another region. Having to import them just meant his children would stand out all the more amongst any classmates that only had Pokemon readily available in Kanto. Though at first Ren pouted about his second Pokemon being a bug, he warmed up to it soon enough. For one, it was noticeably larger than his Nidoran, and even fairly close to his own height. It also made for useful night light whenever he wasn't tired and snuck back out of bed when his parents thought he was asleep. More than anything else, though, Volt and Illume seemed to gain more interest from his peers than the two Nidorans had after any initial fascination with them being siblings the same age who looked similar and had similar Pokemon. They certainly weren't the only ones with imported Pokemon, but they were at least specific species that many of their classmates hadn't seen before. When the next break from school came after both twins had gotten used to their new Pokemon and were once again asking for more, their father brought them on a weekend trip where each was allowed to catch one Pokemon. After all, they couldn't just keep getting them as presents forever. They spent much of the weekend travelling to different areas with the aid of their father's Dragonite and asking about local Pokemon, with the kids frequently arguing over whether or not they wanted a specific one. The only thing they agreed on was that they wanted the same one, though their understanding of that was fuzzy, especially when their first pairs of "same" Pokemon were technically different species. Then they saw it. Tauros and Miltank grazing together in a pasture. Ren didn't recognize either Pokemon, but he could see that they had some things in common and that they were being kept together like they were the same. Though he wasn't permitted to try to catch a grazing Tauros (it was blatantly obvious to their father that the ones that had captured his kids' attention were owned by someone), Ren managed to convince his father to find wild ones. His sister was less certain at first, but she came around to the idea quick enough. At least, the plan had been to find wild ones. It quickly became apparent to the father that his children had picked a fairly rare pair of Pokemon. However, he still wanted them to go through the catching process, so he found himself purchasing more young Pokemon, but this time releasing them in an empty area for his children to battle and recapture. Each had a tough battle, but since their opponents were about as inexperienced as wild Pokemon got, each managed to win. Ren was much more excited about his new Pokemon than his teacher turned out to be when he went back to school. Something a large bull on the playground with kids of rich and powerful people seemed to unnerve those in charge more than smaller, cuter Pokemon had. The next time they talked their father into bringing them to catch Pokemon, Ren advocated something smaller. He loved big Pokemon, but the teacher had made poor Taur stay in his ball even at times when King and Volt were allowed to roam the playground freely. Since they also couldn't play with their Pokemon in the house at home, the bull's main use had ended up being to give the twins short rides around the yard when someone was willing to put them on its back and supervise in case one fell off. This time, their fascination was caught by color-changing bugs. Though their initial assumption that one color was male and one color was female proved false, the twins were told that males and females evolved differently, and an expert even helped them tell the difference so that Ren caught a male Burmy and Rin caught a female. Now in second grade, Ren is once again in the same class as his sister, and has taken to eyeing his classmates' Pokemon for ideas on what to ask his father for next. Though they've both been told they have more Pokemon than kids their age should, Ren is used to being able to get what he wants from his parents by simply asking enough times, even if it doesn't always work on teachers at school. OCCUPATION One half of a pair of Twins, and currently enrolled as a student in a prestigious private elementary school. ALLEGIANCE Ren is not old enough to understand the war, but assumes Lux is good and Nox is evil because his parents support Lux, and he's been living fine under Lux for all of what he can remember of her life.
