It was an absurd plan and he was near convinced that Lux was beginning to pull all these strategies out of their asses. At heart, it was simple. They were sending a small handful of 'elite' fighters to infiltrate Sootopolis via water routes. He'd figured that entering by air would have been much more logical, but they'd insisted that it would have been far too predictable and they wanted the element of surprise to be on their side for the preemptive strike. Of course, Mikael was no longer sure if they could continue to call it that. After all, he knew very well that this was a retaliation against Nox's attack on the Olivine City's light house. Lux wanted to send in their best members for the invasion, and Mikael had even heard that one of the organization's leaders was participating in the invasion. Why had he been picked out of all participants? It was the Wailord, wasn't it? Marius' size alone would have made him a tank-like submarine. What, Lux couldn't find a second trainer that had a gigantic whale in their party? Mikael had no choice to go, especially if he wanted his paycheck. Damn paycheck. And the free housing was a nice bonus, as shoddy as the Saffron City apartment building was. He wasn't complaining since it certainly beat shivering on the streets. But what really made the deal a steal was Lux's offer to bypass Maria's hospitalization. They knew that those were the marionette strings that bound him to dance to their will. He loathed the way they used it against him. He'd jump out a window in a heartbeat for his sister and Lux knew this well. He was free to roam the regions, the world, and yet he felt as if he were bound by invisible fetters. "Here goes, Marius," |
"One." Marius let out a second burst of mist from his blow hole.
"Two." Mikael tightened his grip on the flipper and readjusted his goggles.
"Three!" The Wailord let out a high-pitched wail as he dove downwards, Mikael taking a deep breath and holding it. He cared not for the underwater scenery of the kelp, nor the occasional stirring of a Clampearl hidden within the beds of sea plants. He had a mission to fulfill.
Marius surfaced while Mikael still had some breath to spare. They'd followed the path until they entered a cove, and at the top, Mikael could see there were rays of light filtering through the water. Perfect. Without any uttered commands, Marius tilted his body upwards and began to swim hurriedly towards Sootopolis City. He knew his trainer would need air sometime. Right before the large whale Pokémon broke the surface, Mikael had let go of Marius' flipper and swam back onto the Wailord's back. There, he stayed kneeling on the Pokémon's rubbery back until he broke the surface. Mikael let go of his breath, taking in deep gulps of air and brushing his wet bangs out of his face. He was glad that Lux had offered to alter his gun slightly, allowing it to be used even while wet. As usual, Mikael was hoping the battle would not force him to resort to the weapon, but he kept it on his person at all times. Old habits died hard.
The sight of the Wailord at the center of the city had already caused a commotion. Good. Mikael knew his chief purpose was to serve as a distraction, which would allow the other Lux members to slip into Sootopolis without worrying about getting caught. He reached for two Pokéballs on his belt, releasing Julius and Laelia. The Lucario appeared in a ray of red light, arms folded with his typical stoical expression. On the other hand, Laelia appeared slightly more apprehensive, but she held her head up high with the confidence she managed to muster. "We'll be all right," he assured the Glaceon, and she nodded back at her trainer. There was no time to hesitate. The battle would begin at any given time.
Mikael was just waiting for his opponent.
