EMIL
the sun is shining out of my hands
it can burn, it can blind you
████████████████The leaves overhead softly rustled, mostly coloured in shades of gold and red. However, with the change of seasons, many branches were now bare, seemingly clawing in desperation at the darkening sky. The forest, once so full of life, was now almost empty. Most of the Pokemon had fled the area as soon as fighting had first erupted. Just how long ago was that? First the Nox fighters arrived - months, maybe years ago - and now Lux decide that they want to have a base their, too. Obviously this wouldn't go down to well. Once again, Lux are seeking problems for themselves. Typical of their arrogance, really. Emil hardly found it surprising.
The ensuing battle wouldn't stop Emil from, at least momentarily, enjoying his surroundings. Woods are beautiful, even when scarred by fighting. The trees towered into the sky. Some burnt, their broken boroughs littering the ground, others uprooted completely, and still Emil was aware of the forest’s attempts at regeneration. Here and there small, fragile shoots were appearing amongst discarded shrapnel. Emil breathed in deeply, savouring the earthy smell of grass and trees. It was mildly refreshing to be in a natural setting, especially in the forest. Having grown up in Castelia City’s slums, Emil and some of his friends would occasionally cross the majestic Skyarrow Bridge to tentatively venture into the nearby Pinwheel Forest, and so now he felt quite comfortable here. Oh, it had been such a long time since he had left the city...
About an hour earlier, with a shiver of anticipation, Emil had left the forest-based Nox headquarters with a handful of other fighters. The group had long since split up, but Emil's confidence and excitement had not waned. He had waited so long for a battle. Moving silently from tree to tree in the semi-darkness, Emil's path was partially illuminated by the eerie purple light of his Chandelure, Lustre, who floated absently beside her trainer. Increasingly, Emil was becoming impatient. He was, essentially, a man of action, not content to aimlessly waste time searching in the depths of a forest for an invisible enemy. This was not the combat that he was used to. Never before had Emil fought an enemy in a forest. Quietly, Emil was slightly uneasy about the operation itself. Soon it would be almost completely dark, and the trees could get in the way of his Pokemon.
At twenty years old, Emil had already participated in a handful of battles and was well aware of what was awaiting him. He might have to kill. His Pokemon might die. Or maybe even he himself. Although Emil was reluctant to admit it, even to himself, he was almost hoping for the latter. He was ready to die that night. Somewhere in the distance, Emil could hear shots being fired, mixed with the occasional roar of Pokemon. Somewhere... people and Pokemon were dying. So the battle has truly begun. Emil smiled bitterly. Soon blood would fill the forest, streak the trees, dirty the grass in pools. Bodies would have to be retrieved. Emil's lip curled in disgust at the very thought. That's the sole thing that he loathed about these sorts of events. The bodies...
And suddenly Emil stopped. With a sort of fighter’s intuition, he knew that someone was beginning to approach him. Emil spun around, his body tense, eyes narrowed, as he reached for the pistol at his belt, brushing his fingertips against the cold metal. He wouldn't shoot unless he was absolutely certain that the shot would hit, however. After all, ammo was short - it was entirely monopolized by those Lux bastards. Emil gave a nod to Lustre, who gracefully twisted in the air to follow her trainer's gaze, her unblinking, yellow eyes fixed on something in the darkness. Emil raised his gun and pointed the barrel into the gloom ahead.
