Alyssa had awoken early that morning. Of course, she needed to that morning. After meeting Volkner last night, they had escalated from a simple meet-and-greet to play a rousing game of catch-up to planning a trip all the way to Sunyshore City later that morning. She'd always been an early riser, but this was ridiculous.

For Arceus' sake, it was still dark out.

The white-haired Leader yawned hugely, watching the small Bonsly that had been stalking following her for run around, behind lamp posts and the Canalave Bridge suspension pillars. It was an odd pokemon, but it wasn't as though she was going to drive it off.

"I suppose I could watch it..." she mumbled, pulling the hat further down over the hair she'd hidden fully beneath the beanie. "...not like it'll hurt anything."

Vriska darted through the night, moving as silently as she could with Avery balanced precariously on her back. They were used to this, and Avery himself was used to walking unsteady "ground" anyway. He was more worried about discretion and staying out of sight than falling off.

The fleet--if you could call it that--was about an hour's sailing away, and Avery wasn't the only pirate scouting out Canalave City in the dark. He could've trusted one of his crew to check the place out for him, but Bishop was a good first mate, and he hadn't felt like mingling with the crowd. His crew, he could handle. They were kin to him, truly brethren, but the other pirates… were good pirates. He'd give them that.

Vriska balked at the sight of something. <Glisss,> she hissed, displeased but not wholly concerned. She waited for an order, but her wings were already poised to dive.

Avery didn't spot the bonsly at first, but when he did, his first instinct was to leave it be. It wouldn't see him, not in this dark--but better safe than sorry, and Vriska was antsy. He didn't like her antsy.

"Guillotine, go," he whispered, so soft that even Vriska couldn't make out his words. The finality of the command was unmistakable in his voice though.

Soundlessly, she swerved, a shadow over the water and nothing more. A bladed wing lashed out, slicing at the bonsly, and Vriska pulled sharply away as if they'd never been there.

A hiss sounded in the early darkness, and Alyssa’s eyes immediately grew sharp through her bangs. She didn’t move now. Having dropped her hands to her waist and shoved them ungracefully in her pockets, her slouched position on the bench passed for someone that had fallen asleep in the early morning. I probably look like a bit of a bum... she thought, trying to lighten the slight feeling of discontent that seemed to have settled around her.

As a shadowy figure came into sight as more than a silhouette in the dark, Alyssa was able to make out the markings and body shape of a Gliscor courtesy of the lights that kept Canalave a civilian-friendly place in the sun-less hours. The Gliscor above seemed to be waiting for something, and Alyssa barely had time to wonder what it was before the pokemon dove – straight for the Bonsly.

It took every urge in her body to resist the instinct to leap up and help the young pokemon, which had trotted out into the light from behind a supporting beam of the bridge. The Gliscor was upon it in an instant, slashing at it with its bladed wing. The Bonsly let out an agonized squeal and Alyssa saw the flash of red as blood spurted from the horrid wound, and the top half of the Bonsly fell to the ground beside its legs, which still twitched with the last nerve synapses that had passed through it’s body.

The Gliscor pulled silently away as though nothing had happened, the figure of a trainer on its back disappearing as well into the night. Alyssa forced herself not to move to aid the Bonsly. She knew there was nothing she could do for it. The Leader didn’t even feel the tears well up in the corners of her eyes until they rolled down her cheeks. ”I’m so sorry...” she whispered.
