FLASHBACK-six months ago
A BOY RODE HIS bicycle into Lilycove today- the patrolling nox guerillas let him in at dawn, and by the time he had chained his bike to the stand out front of the puny grocery store, the sun had rose well up above the water that was shimmering in the distance. Somehow this city had been rebuilt from almost nothing- it's buildings stood tall and people roamed the streets once more. Lilycove had redeemed itself as the crowned city of Hoenn, home of the contest hall, which attracted thousands of tourists each year.
He would have just stood there all day if he had the time, but he didn't. The sky was just finishing it's morning drizzle (which was light compared to the heavy rainstorm which had occurred last night) and Ruby had to move quickly. He had already kept his pace steady when he was traveling across Hoenn, now all he had to do was pick up some supplies and get away from Lilycove as fast as possible.
Yes, he had travelled across almost all of Hoenn by foot. Yes, he could have flown. But such a decision would be completely foolish. Everyone would see him if he was in the sky, and the precise idea of his journey was for no one to see him. Ruby didn't wish to be noticed at all. If he ever heard the words "Sorry for your loss" again he would go f*cking ballistic. Sorry doesn't cut it. Not anymore.
Shake it off, shake it all off. He commanded himself, letting go of the pang he felt in his chest. You're just here to get food, and then go. Don't speak to anyone. An important reminder, because Ruby longed someone to confide in, and the thought of resisting talking to someone who seemed capable of listening was almost ridiculous at this point. He honestly didn't know why fighting for Nox was his decision in the first place- all of his loved ones trusted Lux for protection. His mother, Norman, Possibly Wally...Sapphire. She had trusted them and they had failed her. Sapphire trusted me. And I failed her.
He picked up a shopping cart on his way in and began his shopping. This food would have to last him a very long time, and therefore his cart was jammed full with soups, pickles, crackers, water bottles, and other things that wouldn't spoil.
