The building that held Silph Corporation in its bowels gleamed, perhaps the only thing that did so in this godforsaken place still called a city. River Eleine eyed it like it was a sleeping beast poised to swallow her up. Around her, she could all but hear the city dying. Filthy children clogged up the gutters. Men with dark faces hid in the shadows. Women danced in an attempt to swindle a man into paying for her pleasures. It was a disgusting place, and it was Lux's fault.
River sighed and took a sip of her coffee. She sat in a small, peeling cafe across from the corporation, waiting for the partner that had been assigned to her. She knew very little of him, only his name - Sun Griffith. Of course, this was all she needed to know. She wasn't here to chat about their favorite soap operas after all.
As if to remind herself of this, River's pale fingers brushed her near hip, feeling both the Pokeballs that held her only family, and the hilt of the gun hidden in her jacket. Both filled her with a sense of comfort, quelling the anxiety that had begun to grow in the wake of her first Kanto mission. It had been different, living in Hoenn, where the touch of Lux was light, then suddenly coming here, where it felt as though Kanto itself might die at any moment. She would have felt better if at least Tex could have been at her side, but apparently having Pokemon out was a sure sign to get arrested, or at least investigating. And if there was one thing River had learned, it was that anonymity was your best weapon. Lux couldn't hunt who they didn't know existed.
River glanced at the clock. Late. Splendid. She took another small sip of coffee, and again touched her hip. They were behind schedule, and that made her nervous. That, at the fact there was a man in the corner eying her. More likely then not he was simply admiring one of the few women around not reduced to rags, but there was always the chance it was something more. And River was always ready for things to go wrong.
Always.
